Finding Land

    January-March 2002:
  • Began looking for land around 100 acres
  • We found 702 acres in Canada for $80,000US - Click for picture or link to the online listing (asuming it's still available). It was a mix of fields, streams, and forests. The entire parcel seemed like an amazing deal - even leaving the US seemed like a good thing at the time. Everything was fine until we realized that Fargo (from the movie Fargo) was due south of the location. In my opinion, Fargo is too far North for living in the winter, so anything North of Fargo is out of bounds.
  • I found a listing for 110 acres of land surrounded no 3 sides by a river in Iowa for $100,000. My interest weigned when I discovered that (like Canada) Iowa gets pretty darn cold in the winter - also, I began thinking that I'd prefer to not spend SO much money just for the land.

    April-May 2002:
  • Began searching online for land in the 40 acre range for a price around $75,000 in warmer areas.
  • Posted "Land Wanted" listings online at real estate sites.
  • I did a lot of searches on www.unitedcountry.com
  • Someone contacted me after seeing one of my postings. They had 40 acres in VA listing for $80,000. There was a field, woods and a 5 acre pond. I was so interested that I decide to travel down to VA and check it out.
